Hanuman Jayanti is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Hanuman, the devoted supporter of Lord Rama and a central figure in the epic Ramayana. In 2025, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated from 11th to 13th April.
What is Hanuman Jayanti?
Hanuman Jayanti honours the birth of Lord Hanuman, who symbolises strength, devotion, and perseverance. According to Hindu mythology, Hanuman is a vanara (a race of ape-like humanoids) who played a crucial role in Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana. Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the following ways:
Rituals and Traditions
Puja and Offerings: Devotees visit temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman and perform special pujas. Offerings, including flowers, sweets, and fruits, are made to seek his blessings.
Recitation of Texts: The Hanuman Chalisa, a hymn of 40 verses praising Hanuman, is recited by devotees. Some also read from the Ramayana, focusing on sections describing Hanuman's exploits.
Fasting: Many devotees observe a fast on this day, eating only fruits and milk, to purify their bodies and minds.
Processions and Cultural Programmes: In some regions, processions are organised, where people sing and dance in celebration. Cultural programmes and plays depicting Hanuman's life and deeds are also held.
Hanuman in Yoga and Meditation
In yoga and meditation, Hanuman embodies the qualities of strength, flexibility, and devotion. Practitioners draw inspiration from his character to cultivate these attributes in their own lives and practice.
Yoga Asana: Hanumanasana
One of the yoga poses named after Hanuman is Hanumanasana, also known as the splits. This pose requires flexibility and strength, symbolising Hanuman's giant leap from India to Lanka in his quest to find and rescue Sita, wife of Lord Rama.
Meditation and Mantra
Practitioners meditate on the qualities of Hanuman, such as unwavering devotion, courage, and selfless service to experience these qualities within themselves.
Chanting mantras dedicated to Hanuman, like "Om Hanumate Namah", is a common practice in meditation. It is believed to invoke his energy and bring strength and protection.
Hanuman Jayanti not only celebrates the birth of a revered deity but also serves as a reminder of the virtues of devotion and strength, both in spiritual practices and in the challenges of daily life.
